{*} Ooh! This week's episode of Sex and the City guest stars David Duchovny!

[/end of sec school/jc regression]

Addendum: Oh boo. He's all typecast as some mentally-unsound guy who sees aliens. What is with the networks? How about a regular non-alien related part at all? Oh boo again. :(

{*} Life of Pi

I've just finished reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel, and I must say that I'm rather disappointed by it. It started out pretty interesting: a writer, unable to write about a topic, unexpectedly finds salvation in a semi-mystical yarn spun by an old man met in a chance encounter. This leads to him tracking down the owner of the strange tale of "Life in a lifeboat with a Royal Bengal Tiger." They meet, the interview starts, and then the story stops. And lurches about in sea-sickening monotony.

My brother bought the Castaway VCD. After watching it about three times (on separate occasions, thanks for asking), I always thought that must have been a pretty interesting screenplay to write, and a pretty easy thing to act, in terms of memorising lines (hey, I mean, apart from speaking to the volleyball, Tom Hanks didn't exactly have Titanic lines to learn, you know?) After reading Life of Pi, I'm thinking - thank goodness they didn't write in any voice-overs to let us into what he was thinking; I think I would have died of boredom.

Maybe it's a great book about being stuck on a lifeboat after the ship you were on sunk. Maybe I don't get the moral of the story (provided at the end of the book, thank you very much for the needed anvil). Maybe it's the Thin Red Line vs. Saving Private Ryan debate all over again. But I think I'll watch S.W.A.T. instead, thank you very much.

Cheesy, I know, but nice. Lyrics from a small-town band you've never heard of, Powderfinger My Happiness (sounds very Creed).

{*} Quitter

I desperately need to move to Gilmore-Girls-land. Anyone know the direction to Stars Hollow?

[says me who's just watched the whole ENTIRE season 3 of Gilmore Girls in ONE SITTING. I am so using this time before finding a job constructively.]

{*} tabloids, pah.

Today's print edition of The New Paper went "17 killed in Baghdad: UN envoy's last words before dying..."

I picked up the paper, expecting selfless words of inspiration directed to the rest of the world to live in peace and harmony and to love each other, or something of that sentiment, but no, the most important UN envoy in Baghdad's last words before dying were: "water, water..."

I am NOT making light of the fact that this guy died while trying to help out. I'm just a little ticked off at TNP's rather cheaterbug way of making me pick up the paper, that's all. Hello, the guy just went through an incredible amount of pain before dying; you'd think the copywriter for the front page titles could have been just a smidgen more tasteful.

Am I evil?

It's tragic that Singaporeans haven't been very good at reproducing and replacing ourselves over the last couple of months years decades. It's even more tragic now that the Ministry of something-or-other has discovered that the red dot's birthrate might hit a 26 year low. So why do I feel a perverse sense of glee when I see that efforts to make Singaporeans uh, make like bunnies, aren't working?

{*} Some interesting things I've seen around lately

- Did anyone else notice that the montage advertisement for the National Day Rally Speech on tv featuring Goh Chok Tong was initially set to Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called To Say I Love You"? Now it's been hilariously changed to yet another generic classical tune.

- After Bill Bright's Singapore memorial service, I was walking across the canal which runs through Bukit Timah to get to Newton MRT, and right at the start of the bridge was a sign - "Learn swimming now! Call [number]!" Evangeline, walking with me at that time, echoed my thoughts - "Interesting place for a swimming lesson advertisement."

- I don't know what S-11 is doing, but they have a HUGE HUGE tomato at the top of the roof of one of their AMK Central outlets. I need to get a lighter digicam.

 Oh Cruel Life!

It was quite a truamatic experience to stop school - the question "What's Next?" came popping up ever so often. And work is so so different from school because school was my life for so long - school never really stopped at 630pm, classes just did. The library still awaited perusal - so many avenues to explore for research! Work just starts cruelly at 830am, then stops just as cruelly at 630pm.

{*} Books that never go away (for angeline, who requested a post)

I just picked up again one of those books to me - Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. It's a horror story about two boys, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, both born one second apart each other one week before Halloween, and a circus that rolls into their town. No, no clowns involved (at least, not that I remember) - that's Stephen King's It. One of my favourite bits before the creeps start to set in:

Watching the boys vanish away, Charles Halloway supressed a sudden urge to run with them, make the pack. He knew what the wind was doing to them, where it was taking them, to all the secret places that were never so secret again in life. Somewhere in him, a shadow turned mournfully over. You had to run with a night like this, so the sadness could not hurt.

Look! he thought. Will runs becuase running is its own excuse. Jim runs because something's up ahead of him.

Yet, strangely, they do run together.

... ...

And Will? Why, he's the last peach, high on a summer tree. Some boys walk by and you cry, seeing them. They feel good, they look good, they are good. Oh, they're not above peeing off a bridge, or stealing an occasional dime-store pencil sharpener, it's not that. It's just, you know, seeing them pass, that's how they'll be all their life; they'll get hit, hurt, cut, bruised, and always wonder why, why does it happen? How can it happen to them?

But Jim now, he knows it happens, he watches for it happening, he sees it start, he sees it finish, he licks the wound he expected, and never asks why: he knows. He always knew. Someone knew before him, a long time ago, someone who had wolves for pets and lions for night conversants. Hell, Jim doesn't know with his mind. But his body knows. And while Will's putting a bandage on his latest scratch, Jim's ducking, weaving, bouncing away from the knockout blow which must inevitably come.

So there they go, Jim running slower to stay with Will, Will running faster to stay with Jim, Jim breaking two windows in a haunted house because Will's along, Will breaking one window instead of none because Jim's watching. God, how we get our fingers in each other's clay. That's friendship, each playing the potter to see what shapes we can make of the other.

Jim, Will, he thought, strangers. Go on. I'll catch up, some day...

Angeline dear, it's mid-week! Push on towards the weekend... it'll be here before you know it!

{*} What would you do if you had only a year left to live?

[Warning: slightly rambly post; I think I have the beginnings of a slight flu.]

What indeed? This question popped into my head tonight as I was walking home, wondering about -again- life, and what my purpose in it was. Glorifying Jesus, of course - but practically? Like what sort of job should I be gunning for? (For obvious reasons, this question runs through my mind quite often these days. Almost like the refrain from a most irritating song which won't get out of your head.) A conversation with Soojin brought up the notion of God giving us a "sound mind" in which to make decisions by - sort of like God NOT micromanaging our lives by not needing us to ask him permission every time we need to eat or whatever...

But anyway.

I was walking home, and was thinking of how relieved I would be to finally go Home instead of having to handle this pesky business of living, which sort of explained how responses to terminal illnesses, such as Bill Bright's response to his illness ("Praise God!"). Then I started to think about terminal illnesses, and how people behaved when they got the news - and what would I do if I were ever in that situation. I think one thing is for sure - I wouldn't be worrying about a job! Somehow, knowing that you have less than a "natural" lifespan's time left to live changes the way you negotiate with the world.

If I had one year left to live, I'd ideally like to see myself collecting money and working with Crusade or SIF or some other agency to build houses and get clean water to people in third world countries. Whether or not I'll actually get down to doing it of course, is a totally different matter. But I think I'd like to do that.

What would you do, or like to see yourself do, if you had only one year left to live?

One odd statement that I've been noticing more and more as I browse the online job banks - "Application without picture will not be entertained."
