 南桥男人难做人

It's rather unfortunate that the principal of Nan Chiau has to step down because of a breach in disciplinary protocol. From the number of calls made to the Chinese hui guan, he seems to be a popular guy, with words like "soft spoken" and "mild mannered" being applied to his character.

He said that he hit the girl because she had lied to him - and this was her 20th-or-so disciplinary offence. It sounds like he probably gave her a number of chances to prove herself worthy of trust, but she breached it time and time again, and this was the last straw, and the principal lost it just before he could walk away from the situation.

I rather admire the guy for his morals - he said that he clearly broke the rules, and so he would follow them to the letter. But I guess that he has to leave his job, even though I think he might have just made a terrible slip in a moment of weakness. If he doesn't, it starts a rather dangerous precedent where teachers can just hit students as and when they feel that it is "justified". Who decides justification on these sorts of matters anyway? Though sometimes I think that the fear of the teacher in the classroom, and a general respect for rules and regulations could and should be whipped back into the kids. But that's just my two cents' worth.

 bird of prey

A member of the T'ang Quartet, who shall remain anonymous, said that I was "flighty" today. Or rather, that someone else "looked less flighty than you."

Of course, this is taken out of context.

Of course, it was said in jest, though in mock-seriousness.

And of course, I responded by hitting him at least three times. Dolt. But a very lovable one.

I like having funny colleagues.

 Something's up?

I've had quite a full week, but am currently too much in a salt and pepper mixture of tiredness and laziness to blog. Hope you're having a good weekend too.

This was sent to me by a friend, and...

was written by an 83 year old...The last line says it all -

Dear Friend,
I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time working. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savour, not to endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.

I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event , getting the sink unstopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom.

I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries..

I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank.

"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary; if it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.

I'm not sure what others would've done had they known they wouldn't be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted.

I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles.

I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favorite food was.

I'm guessing; I'll never know.

It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them. I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives.

And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.

If you received this, it is because someone cares for you.

If you're too busy to take the few minutes that it takes right now to forward this, would it be the first time you didn't do the little thing that would make a difference in your relationships? I can tell you it certainly won't be the last.

Take a few minutes to send this to a few people you care about, just to let them know that you're thinking of them.

"People say true friends must always hold hands, but true friends don't need to hold hands because they know the other hand will always be there."

I don't believe in miracles. I rely on them.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

 Hetero Poetry Club

It looks like I'm not the only one sick and tired of the homosexuality running rampant in the Singapore arts scene. Hetero Poetry, anyone?

 California, Here I Come *

When I first started playing the guitar, I told myself that I would take it slow and not jump the gun on things. No developing aspirations to be the next Slash or Sting or any other great guitarist whose names started with the letter S (but I made an exception for Sheryl.) As a result, I made one of those funny rules that we sometimes make to ourselves, that I wouldn't take a peep at the Eagle's seminal guitar song, Hotel California, till I felt I could passibly handle the type of picking required for that sort of thing (passibly = picking at 1% of the actual speed required). Today, I felt bold and callused enough to look at it.

Bad move, of course.

The crazy song requires not one, not two, but THREE guitars, one of which is a twelve string! That's... that's... insane! But sounding beautifully insane. I will never get to that level, never. Ever. I look at the tab and I want to throw my guitar away and burn it as firewood.

(* song by Sophie B. Hawkins, another rocking guitarist)

Which Weird Latin Phrase Are You?

It isn't a poem

 We will pep you

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit this, but I really like the pepsi ad that's been making it's rounds on tvMobile (it's everywhere! argh!!!) Featuring Britney, Pink and Beyoncé in gladiator dress, and a constipated looking Enrique (I think it's him that's playing Caesar?), they sing their version of Queen's We Will Rock You. A few things keep my eyes glued to the screen whenever it comes on:

1) The girls look good, and I need my daily dose of vitamin insecurity complex B12.
2) The song is too catchy.
3) They look like they're having fun, and it's fun to see people having fun.

Two Queen band members (Brian May and Roger Taylor) were apparently at the ad launch party in London, so I'm guessing that the ad had their blessing? I can't help but wonder what Freddy Mercury would have to say though.

 Who's the Boss?

For all of you who have been praying - thank you. My meeting with my boss went well, very well in fact. Nothing's been resolved because he (justifably) needs time to think over certain issues, but certain things which needed to be conveyed (such as my boredom on the job) were conveyed.

And although he's not hot on sponsoring my course, I'm glad at least I asked. I've always thought that it is always difficult to ask for things, and put yourself out there and face possible rejection, but I'm glad that I did. Now I can dispense advice like that without feeling like too much of a hypocrite.

Special thanks also go out to Fuzz and Stee. You guys know why. :)

 Bizarre act by misguided Christians

The easter bunny gets whipped in a bid to "convey that Easter is not just about the Easter bunny, it is about Jesus Christ."

Serving the Lord's Supper: the mathematical nuances of the act

Tonight, I had the priviledge of serving The Lord's Supper.

There are three parts to the way my church serves The Lord's Supper - the bread/wafers go out first in plates, then the tiny cups are distributed, and then collected back again. Today, I served and collected the tiny cups.

Before the act itself, I never really stopped to think about what an important role it was - especially tonight. I knew it was important that we serve the Supper, and there should be people serving it, but the little nuances just escaped me - like how there were 6 senior citizens serving the bread, and 6 youth serving the wine. The young and the old.

And then there's mathematics - 6 + 6 = 12. Twelve disciples. During the course of the service, we talked about Judas. As I was serving the wine, it occured to me - it could have been any one of us. It could have been me, or the guy standing beside me, or Adeline. [further thoughts] It's just another one of those thoughts that swirl around my head unconsciously - it's there, but it's just the seed of a thought, without any reflection and ponderance to feed it and help it grow. Tonight offered a chance for both, and it sunk in a little deeper: it really could have been any of us, IF.

Although I got excited about serving the Supper as the day progressed, when the time came for me to actually serve it, it was something else, not excitement, that I felt. During the serving, I felt like I was a servant to my congregation - and that although being a servant means a position of less power and authority, it was also a great priviledge given by God to be able to bless others through service. I did not meditate on what my serving the Lord's Supper meant, nor give it too much thought, other than the occasional "this is going to be so cool!", so when the import and gravity (which normally only comes to me after protracted thought on a subject) of the situation presented itself to me as I was serving, I was pretty blown away.

So - tonight, I had the priviledge of serving The Lord's Supper.

 Body Movin'

Body movin, body movin,
A1 sound, sound so soothing

Things happen when you pray. Stuff has been moving at work, as God moves in my life. I am hopeful that it's all good.

Let your back bone flip but don't slip a disc
Let your spine unwind just take a risk...

 The Passion of the Christ

If you're not planning on going to watch it, watch it.
If you're the kind of person that hates gore and violence, watch it.
If you're think that Mel Gibson is just sensationalising the crucifixion, watch it.
In short, I think you get it: watch it.

I don't think it's so much a "I liked Passion" rather than I really appreciate it being made. We sing "Thank You for the Cross", we pray "Never let us forget Your sacrifice" so often that it doesn't really mean much, does it? We occasionally get wells of emotional highs during a particularly moving worship service, and we read books and articles about the protracted pain of crucifixion, but do we ever flinch when we sin against God? The way we flinched when we watched Jesus being flagellated, his flesh ripped with that cruel stick in this pathetic movie, a pale shadow of what really was, 2004 years ago?

"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Cor 5:21)

The whole idea of Jesus and the crucifixion was for him to take the punishment of sin for us, so that when the time comes (and it will come for everyone) and we stand accused of every wrong thing that we did without defense, we will be shown grace, unmerited mercy. It is a huge thing for one person to take the punishment for someone else's wrongdoing, but for someone to take on the sins of the whole world, while being sinless himself... if you can't understand it, nor appreciate its full import, well, join me. If a paltry movie can make me appreciate Jesus's sacrifice better, then I say again: watch it.
