GeekSpeek: Goog-ed out
According to Nielson/NetRatings, 49% of all searches conducted in December last year by Americans (and that's a whopping 5 BILLION) were done on google. It's a nice company and all, but you've really got to start wondering about whether that's good for everyone involved, monopoly and all.
Other sites are trying to catch up, many offering seach-and-win programmes (really!), but you've gotta admit that early-mover advantage was lost when they kept giving us stupid responses to our queries.
If you're really interested in Search Engine capabilities and limitations, you should check out the Introna and Nissenbaum paper on The Politics of Search Engines, which covers how engineers grapple with problems when they start building, and how systemic omissions are Bad For Everyone.
