 Skinny jeans

So I'm planning on altering an old pair of bell-bottom jeans into skinny jeans. I thought I'd hand it over to the alteration aunty, but after watching this awesome video - complete with rap soundtrack - I think this project is home DIY-able.

Wish me luck!

There are plenty others too, but this one tickled me the most, and I think the rap soundtrack won me over.

A Little Walkabout: The Singapore Night Festival 2011 (mostly)

After a Walkabout
returning home is like
stepping back into familiar shoes
only to realise
that the shoes are a little stiffer from disuse
and new calluses
are in rather unexpected places...

A surprisingly good view of the Arab Street rooftops from - of all places - a toilet.
I happened to be there to pick up instructions for a paper I am writing.

Zsofi Tapas Bar (68 Dunlop Street) is a lovely place
(mid-range price) for a good chat with a friend over tapas.

Drinks at $12-20 - beer drinkers could share
a jug for three free tapas (see diagram on menu)

it's such a fine and natural delight)

Jellyfish floating in the SAM's courtyard - to the

In all honesty, I commented to YM, if I were diving and
that close to so many jellyfish, I'd swim for my life.

 In Progress: Two Years

Nope, not done yet. I think this may be it for this piece; I'm a little at a loss as to how to continue without destroying my work; the detail eludes my skill! You can look at how lovely the original by Christopher Moeller is:

Awesome conversations ... in slow motion

Some of us are rediscovering the wonderful world of slow email... only now, with the wonders of gmail technology, we can actually see how long we take to respond to certain things. For example, this was one of the most awesome conversations I've had recently - and it was all about lights. Yes, like, switch on the light, that kind of light.

 Sewing (Part II)

After a prototype was improved on, this is the final product for Kris's jiemei's obi belt:

And because I know some of you guys are curious, here's some photos of the process:

measuring out the backing strip and the brocade

This is done with high tech equipment: (a) 10 year old scissors, (b) blunt wood pencil, and (c) measuring tape from secondary school. The backing strip is 44", and the strips are 4" wide, cut perpendicular to the selvage. The brocade is 60", and the strips are 10-11" wide (approximately, I wasn't so strict with the brocade.)

strips all cut out, and the sewing setup

Once the cloth was in place, and the backing strip cut out, it was time to go to the mattresses with the design. My (mom's) sewing machine, all the thread, bobbins, needles etc - the works.

the accessories - ribbon and string, and the finished product

The tie should be in the front, so I'm shifting things around on the belt; what you see here is a prototype.

the adjustable fastening

Because I'll only be able to get to the bridemaids on the actual wedding day itself, the fastenings have to be adjustable. Thank goodness that this is a problem that most St Nicks girls are familiar with - solve the problem with a safety pin!

 Bookshelves and Beds

(This is the first from a number of backlogged posts. SX kicked my ass on MSN to post.)

Having friends who are architects means being somewhat informed about the structural possibility of creating your dream home. It also means occasionally having supper at 2am in the morning, which is both fattening and fun.

While waiting for Ben to finish some work, I was struck by the gorgeous bookshelf that his company had built for their reference books. Books of all shapes and sizes were in this bookshelf that spanned the wall - my ultimate dream bookcase. It was stained a darker shade than I would have preferred, but the idea was there - a wall-to-ceiling-to-wall bookshelf. I told him I wanted that for my house next time, except I wanted my bed built into the bookshelf somehow as well - yet another benefit of having architect friends: you can make all sorts of ridiculous demands on their skillz.

While waiting, I also perused a book - which was written in FOUR languages - on staircases. There were a number of things which drew me to the book: (1) I could not believe that there could possibly be a book on staircases alone, (2) the book was really thick, and (3) there were numerous post-its sticking out of the book, which was a testament to its popularity.

The book (and the hour I spent perusing it) was highly educational. So many staircases, so many materials, so little time. Metal, wood, plastic, even glass; the possibilities were endless. Given that we build up, instead of sideways in land-scarce Singapore, it helped explain and justify the crazy amount of flags there were in the book. One staircase which really raised my eyebrows (and intrigued me) was a set that were stuck into a wall, with no bannister or support.

Something that looks like this:

Pretty nifty huh? Not very safe for kids, but an argument could be made that firstly, I wouldn't be that irresponsible to let my kids access that staircase till they could walk confidently, and next, that I wouldn't want to raise kids that were dumb enough to test the stair's safety. But yes, accidents do happen. I'm just saying that it's a cool way to make stairs, that's all.

Many Rs make... I have no idea what

Reduce, reuse, recycle.
That was the mantra the Green For Life frog extolled when he spoke to us from his green lily pad. The poster on the noticeboards were forever proclaiming the virtues of the 3Rs, but like any typical response to environmentalism, schools never cut down on their use of paper, and especially never in innovative ways, such as cancelling school exams or homework blitzes.

Recently, an exhibition noted that the philosophy has now been expanded to encompass nine Rs (in no order of merit):
  1. reclaim
  2. reduce
  3. resource
  4. recreate
  5. remake
  6. respond
  7. recycle
  8. remind
  9. reuse

utterubbish was recommended to me by an architect friend who was sure that I would love the practical side of construction and design. Part of the Singapore Design Festival 2007, it was a large exhibition held in the City Hall building (the one that overlooks the Padang, where everyone goes to take graduation photos for some reason.) Loads of good, and not-so-good stuff there.

A chair made from cardboard, stuck together in a row.

Like the sign says - it's a makeshift cardboard toilet,
designed for disaster areas and park rangers.

I have NO idea. This just looked stylistically interesting.

Strangely enough, it reminds me of Predator - where Arnie was fighting Predator, and they got stuck in the meat-packing district, and all this beef was hanging up obscuring them from each other - as well as providing an excellent location for a fight.

Yet another excellent idea - malleable cement! Also for disaster areas.
It's called "CC" - something concrete, I think.

This post is mainly for posterity's sake.
